Hello flist! I know it's been a while (try almost a year) since my last post. I have still followed everyone's posts, even if I've been neglectful in commenting. I've cleaned up my journal and am ready to start using this thing once more. For the last few weeks I've been busy enough that sitting down to type something out about my day just hasn't fit into my schedule. I wanted to make my first post back in the world of LiveJournal one that would help me do some flist preening, but instead this post seemed more important. I'll get around to the administrative type post some time soon.

On Wednesday I was lucky enough to have my bosses let us leave two hours early for the Thanksgiving holiday! Since Nick would have been working three more hours after that I decided to drive home on my own and just grab him from the metro that evening. I'm glad I left when I did. I made excellent time home, despite traffic, and was nearly to my doorstep within an hour. In the end though, I didn't get home until well past that, nearly an hour later.

Coming down the highway, where it begins to reduce speed for a stoplight ahead, I saw a young woman in a car that had seen far better days. She was broken down in the middle of the lane and looked rather distraught. It seemed strange to me she had no cellphone and was just there hazardously blocking traffic. Long story short, she'd been there for a while and couldn't move the car on her own. Her phone was at her destination (some friend's place she left it at) so she couldn't even call for help or a tow.

We pushed her car about a quarter of a mile to shoulder space, and fortunately for us people actually bothered to stop when they saw two girls trying to move a huge old sedan. I tried to jump her car twice (during this police showed up) but apparently the alternator was shot so it sometimes just doesn't work. The officers felt bad for me being stuck there I guess, despite my insistence that I had nowhere better to be, and got on her case about just getting it towed since it obviously couldn't be jumped. I let her use my phone to call some friends and then get the tow.

During this time, I more closely observed her car. The tags were three months expired (the cops pointed this out but felt bad enough for her that they let it slide), the left headlight was caved in, there was no longer a grill covering the engine and the hood looked crumpled and was held on solely with twine. The interior was no Ritz Carlton either, and had seen better days well before the turn of the century. (I am a dork and really wanted to use that phrase).

I felt so lucky when it was all done. I have a reliable car, which, believe me, I am immensely grateful for. I have people I can rely to bring me a phone and get me out of the rain. This poor girl had no one looking out for her that day until I stopped. Not a single person she called could be bothered to come get her, come help her, or even bring her the cell she'd left. It makes me thankful that I have people I can count on, a car that doesn't leave me stranded in the middle of highways, and most importantly, I have the time in my life that I'm not "too busy" to help a person in need. People can be so busy and always have "somewhere to be" that we forget what it means to love one another.

Remember, this season and year round, to recall the things you are thankful for. Life may be hard some days but there's always a bright spot. There's always someone waiting to share a smile with you, even if they are a stranger and you're both covered in car grease and rain.
